Fees May Apply: (Editorial) Some local governments struggle with transparency
By Heather Persson, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, 19 Dec 2019
A report into the dealings of the Northern Village of Pinehouse is due out any time. An independent inspector was called in by the provincial government after the provincial information and privacy commissioner wrote a 13th report about how the village government handled requests under the Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The inspector is also looking into the general practices and operations of the village.
This quote from the village’s mayor, Mike Natomagan, saying he does not plan to change how Pinehouse responds to requests for information, was especially memorable and was a motivator for the Fees May Apply project:
“To be quite honest, living in (one of the poorest regions of Canada), do we care about freedom of information? Not really. Are we going to get another slap on the hand here? Probably … We’ll get to it when we get to it, when we have time, because there are other priorities within our community,” Natomagan said to the StarPhoenix in January. “We’ll continue with what we’re doing and how we’re doing things.”
